How to introduce ourselves

In this post we will learn how to introduce ourselves.

Barbara: Ciao. Io sono Barbara. Tu come ti chiami?
(Hello. I am Barbara. What's your name?)
John: Mi chiamo John. Piacere.
(My name is John. Pleased to meet you)
Barbara: Piacere. Di dove sei?
(Nice to meet you. Where are you from?)
John: Sono americano, di Boston, ma abito a Milano. E tu?
(I am American, from Boston, but I live in Milan. And you?)
Barbara: Io sono di Firenze.
(I am from Florence)

In Ialian to introduce ourselves we use the verb “CHIAMARSI” that literally means to call oneself. This is a reflexive verb, so after the subject pronouns we need always to put the reflexive pronouns: MI, TI, SI, CI, VI, SI.

Let's see now how to form the present tense of the verb:

Some examples:
  • Come si chiama il tuo amico? (What's your friend's name? Literally this question means: “How does your friend call himself?”)
  • Si chiama Lorenzo. (His name is Lorenzo)
  • Come vi chiamate? (What are your names?)
  • Come si chiamano i tuoi genitori? (What are your parents' names?)
  • Si chiamano Giovanna e Giorgio. (They call themselves Giovanna and Giorgio)
